Dear Adolescent Drug Rehab,
I know my kid is a good kid. And I don’t want to freak out, but I’ve smelled cigaretes on his breath a few times. Should I be worried about it leading to something else?
Am I overreacting? Don’t think I need to send my kid to teen drug rehab over this.
But should I be concerned?

Dear Kathy,
You’re right. There is no need to rush your kid to adolescent drug rehab after a couple of Marlboro lites. But there is a link between smoking and alcohol. (Just check out an NA or AA meeting to see.)
Nicotine often ramps up the craving for alochol, and cigarettes can ramp up the effects of alcohol. (Vicious cycle, I know.)
I think the best thing to do is have an open and honest conversation with your kid about what’s going on in a non-judgemental way. You might get more info than you think.
