Christian Drug Rehab: Does it Work?

Christian drug rehab is, obviously, a rehabilitation setting where much of the recovery focuses on shifting the addiction to a relationship with God.

Most faith-based drug rehab centers don’t require a belief in Christianity to be their sole addiction-coping mechanism.

But there’s no question that there is an emphasis–as it should, I mean Christian is in the name–of the values of this form of adolescent drug rehab.

What most people want to know is….does it work?

So here are a few pros and cons–as a drug rehab professional sees them–of sending your young teen or adolescent to one of these.

Christian Drug Rehab Pros

1. Not that different from secular adolescent drug rehab–just the higher power is identified.
2. Some programs focus on a relationship with God–and less on the addiction itself–which can be good for some clients do not respond well to criticism.
3. For a teen or adolescent who already has a Christian upbrining, a faith based drug rehab program can be a good way to reach them.
4. Though data is hard to come by….some Christian drug rehab centers do boast some startling success rates.

Christian Drug Rehab Cons

1. Not all drug rehab centers are created equal, and this is even more so with Christian drug rehab centers. If the emphasis is too far away from standard, accepted forms of addiction therapy, than the client can miss out on a thoroughly transformative experience.
2. If the young teen or adolescent has no Christian background, or that background is fraught with emotional radioactivity, than I would look in a direction.

The best thing to do as a parent or loved one is ask: what would make the most comfortable adolescent drug rehab. You’re trying to heal–and break addiction–not convert.

If Christian drug rehab is the adolescent drug rehab program is the one that will do that, then by all means get that young person in rehab today.
